What is a fiber Laser?
A fiber laser is an industrial cutting system that uses a highly focused beam of light to cut metal with extreme precision, speed, and consistency. Unlike older laser systems, a fiber laser generates its energy inside a flexible fiber-optic cable, therefore allowing more power to reach the material with less energy loss. As a result, fiber lasers are widely used in modern metal fabrication because they produce cleaner cuts, tighter tolerances, and faster cycle times across a wide range of metals.
How it Works:
The laser starts with laser diodes that create light energy. Next, that light is amplified inside a rare-earth-doped-fiber-optic cable (typically using ytterbium). As the light travels through the fiber, it becomes extremely concentrated and powerful. The laser beam is directed through precision optics, and then focused into a microscopic point, and finally delivered to the metal surface. At the focal point, the energy density is high enough to melt or vaporize the material, while an assist gas (such as nitrogen or oxygen) clears away molten metal, leaving a clean, accurate cut.
Why they are ideal for Metal Cutting:
- Higher cutting speeds, especially on thick to medium-thickness metals
- Exceptional precision and edge quality
- Ability to cut reflective metals like aluminum, brass, and copper
