Rio Del Rey Bridge
Project Description:
Completed in 2021 in Phoenix, Arizona, the Rio del Rey Pedestrian Bridge provides a safe, fully enclosed crossing over a major freeway, reconnecting children and families with nearby schools. The 425-foot steel truss bridge uses perforated panels and staggered patterns to balance safety, shade, airflow, and open views, while tilted polycarbonate panels above cast shifting shards of color across the interior throughout the day. Sunlight and material work together to transform the long crossing into an engaging experience, changing by the hour, and at night, blue lighting creates a calm, immersive atmosphere. The bridge’s distinctive Z-shaped alignment connects two ramps and spans 18 feet above the freeway, with a 10-foot interior clearance designed for comfort and accessibility.
