Sun Garden
Project Description:
The Sun Garden public art installation lines the pedestrian walkway beneath the Mill Avenue Railroad underpass, just north of Broadway in Tempe, Arizona. It transforms a previously utilitarian passage into an engaging and dynamic public space.
We fabricated the structure using precisely indexed roll-formed tubing to ensure accurate alignment during assembly. In addition, we integrated laser-cut plate brackets to support the overall form and maintain structural consistency throughout the installation.
Dichroic acrylic “leaves” are woven throughout the piece. These elements shift color as pedestrians move past, creating a responsive visual effect that changes with movement and light. As a result, the installation delivers a constantly evolving experience that encourages interaction and slows pedestrian movement through the space.
Overall, the project blends engineered precision with artistic expression to activate the underpass and enhance the daily pedestrian experience.
