What is TIG Welding?
TIG welding, also called Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), is a precise welding method. It uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create strong, clean welds. In addition, an inert gas, usually argon, shields the weld from contamination. Because of this, TIG welding gives the welder exceptional control over heat and filler material. As a result, it works perfectly for thin metals, tight tolerances, and projects where appearance, strength, and accuracy matter.
How it works:
TIG welding works by creating an electric arc between the tungsten electrode and the base metal. As the arc forms, it generates concentrated heat that melts the material at the joint without consuming the electrode. At the same time, the shielding gas protects the molten metal from oxidation and contamination. When needed, a filler rod is added manually to the weld puddle. This allows precise control over bead size, penetration, and weld quality. Ultimately, the process produces clean, strong welds with excellent appearance.
When to choose TIG over MIG:
You should choose TIG welding instead of MIG welding when precision, control, and appearance are critical. In particular, it is ideal for thin materials, tight tolerances, and applications that require clean, high-quality welds.
